Agentless Security Next Step For Cloud

What, you’ve never heard of it? Well, neither had I until I read this article in CloudTweaks. According to the piece, agentless security is a “dynamic security solution that harnesses the power of cloud technology to monitor computers and smart devices without the aid of a physical agent or deployable monitoring protocol.” OK, that makes sense – it’s similar to agentless backup or remote monitoring and management. So why might a solution provider explore this new type of security? There are definitely environments that are not agent-friendly, such as virtual machines or production environments in the public cloud.  But this article talks at length about using agentless security for private cloud, and I think it will be of interest to IT providers exploring cloud and how it can open the door to deep relationships with clients ranging from SMB to enterprise.

While private cloud is most often associated with midsize or enterprise class businesses, not all the organizations that use virtualization to create a “private cloud,” have a full IT staff, which makes them a perfect fit for outsourced IT – from project work to deployment to ongoing optimization and management. That is where agentless security comes in. CloudTweaks further defines agentless security as: allowing you to monitor one or more computers without having to install an agent. Updates are automated, the software runs effortlessly across different types of server platforms and management of security notifications is consolidated within a single interface. Best of all, agentless security can protect multiple endpoints across a range of densities without performance degradation.” Thus, with virtual environments, and ultimately, public cloud environments, agentless security extends the cloud value proposition of flexibility, real-time insight in a fluid environment, single interface management and, in some cases, IT cost savings.

It will be interesting to see how and where agentless security hits the channel and intersects with cloud. It took some time for agentless backup and RMM to take hold; there are some concerns about agentless technology in some situations. But overall, I suspect this will be the first step in aligning security with cloud’s unique environments.
